Rebels led by the Islamist group HTS control the city.

The Syrian city of Aleppo is no longer under the control of President Bashar al-Assad’s government, for the first time since the country’s conflict began 13 years ago. This was announced on Sunday by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), reports TASR according to the AFP agency.

The rebels launched an offensive against the Syrian army

The rebels, led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), “control the city of Aleppo except for neighborhoods controlled by Kurdish forces. For the first time since the beginning of the conflict… the city of Aleppo is out of the control of Syrian regime forces,” SOHR Director Rami Abdel Rahman said.

Rebels launched an offensive against the Syrian army in the northwest of the country on Wednesday. This is the biggest offensive against the Russian and Iranian-backed Syrian government since 2020. They currently control Aleppo, according to SOHR, and have also managed to capture key cities in the neighboring provinces of Idlib and Hama. According to several agencies, they proceed surprisingly quickly.
