Children who have contact with animals have less risk of allergies

A study from the University of Gothenburg, released this week, followed a group of children who lived in the environment of a dairy farm or had pets.

Children who grow up with pets or in animal farming environments are less likely to develop allergies, due to early contact with anaerobic bacteria common in the mucous membranes of the human body.

The conclusions are contained in a study from (Sweden) published this week, said .

of which 28 lived in the environment of a dairy farm, and 40 had pets.

Stool samples were collected from these children from three days of age to 18 months, and a microbial culture was performed on them, which allowed the characterization of the composition of the intestinal microbiota, with data that included bacterial colonization rates and population counts of bacterial groups. .

The results showed that children who grew up in dairy farm environments had a higher proportion of anaerobic bacteria in the first week.

However, they presented lower proportions of ‘Escherichia coli’ bacteria in the first months of life and less frequent colonization by ‘Clostridioides difficile’ at 12 months of age.

In turn, The presence of domestic animals in the home was associated with more frequent colonization by the bacteria ‘Bifidobacterium’, ‘Lactobacillus’ and ‘Bacteroides’ in the first months of life.

The researchers related the early colonization of mucous membranes by the bacteria ‘Bifidobacterium’, ‘Lactobacillus’ and ‘Bacteroides’, and the lowest presence of the bacteria ‘Clostridioides difficile’ between 4 and 12 months of age with the lowest subsequent development of allergies.

To reach this conclusion, Pediatricians monitored the development of allergies in children participating in the research, aged 3 to 8 years, and found that it was lower compared to data from children who had not had contact with animals.
