The proposal establishes general standards for traffic agents and defines rules for entry into the career

The CCJ (Committee on Constitution, Justice and Citizenship) of the Chamber of Deputies approved a bill that amends the law to authorize the carrying of weapons for traffic agents, as long as they meet the training and control requirements set out in the legislation. Carrying a weapon will be permitted on and off duty.

The approved proposal establishes general rules for traffic agents. In addition to defining rules for entering the career – such as Brazilian nationality and higher education diploma –, the approved text recognizes the activity of traffic agent as being of a police nature, under the terms of the Constitution.

Traffic agents must be public servants with a specific career and entry through competitive examination, performing functions linked to inspection and traffic education and the promotion of road safety.

The text will go directly to the Senate, unless there is an appeal for analysis in the plenary.

The approved text was the substitute presented by the rapporteur, deputy (PL-SP), to Bill 2160/23, by deputy Nicoletti (União-RR), and the versions approved by the Public Security committees; and Administration and Public Service.

According to Delegate Paulo Bilynskyj, the adjustments were necessary to preserve the general guidelines for traffic agents. As they operate in the States, the Federal District and municipalities, it will be up to these federative entities to legislate on the topic.

The proposal regulates Constitutional Amendment 82/14, which deals with road safety in the States, the Federal District and municipalities.
