The President of the Republic is against the immediate end of the 5% cut in politicians’ salaries. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa says that the measure does not put the promulgation of the Budget at risk, but argues that the measure should only be valid for future terms.
Almost as is the presence of the President of the Republic at the epicenter of the logistics of the Food Bank Against Hunger. In addition to the selfies and after passing the line of hundreds of volunteers participating in the work, the president wanted to set an example.
It’s his way of promoting the campaign and trying to convince more people to contribute. The President himself contributed food and visiting the supermarket earlier in the day left him optimistic.
“I had the feeling that it was better than the last campaign, which was already frankly good. A great response”, said Marcelo.
This will be one of the last times that President Marcelo will be able to volunteer for . He is at the end of his term and possible successors are beginning to organize themselves.
Marcelo continues to resist talking about presidential elections, but he does not shy away from the end of the cut in politicians’ salaries.
“I would have preferred it to only apply to future terms and not current terms. I already said that there are arguments for and against. When they explained to me that there was a huge number of public positions, at various levels, that were directly or indirectly covered, I respect that this could have an impact in the future in normalizing the situation”, commented the head of state.
Precisely the end of the cut in politicians’ salaries gave rise to this protest. On Friday, Chega delayed parliamentary work. Despite the , he does not believe that changing the rules could be the way forward and calls for common sense.
“It would be impossible every time there is a debatable point in the Assembly of the Republic (…) for there to be an election campaign in the windows of Parliament. Each party put up posters, flags, whatever they wanted. (…) It’s not so much about material but intangible heritage, democracy and respect for institutions are more important”, concluded Marcelo.
