The elected president of the United States, Donald Trump, This Saturday he notified the countries BRICS+ members, the forum of emerging countries that make up, among others Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa, that will impose tariffs on them 100% if they dare to support a currency other than the dollar.
“We require a commitment of these countries that they will not create a new BRICS currency, nor support any other currency to replace the powerful US dollar, or face 100% tariffs, and they will say goodbye to the wonderful American economy,” Trump said in a statement posted on his social network, ‘Truth Social’.
The proposal for a joint currency of the group was presented at the 2022 BRICS summit in South Africa although it has not yet resulted in any progress.
“The idea that the BRICS countries are trying to move away from the dollar while we we stand idly watching is over. “Let them look for another idiot,” the president-elect has warned.
Trump, it should be remembered, has used tariffs again as diplomatic weapon in recent days. For example, it has threatened to impose tariffs of 25% on all Mexican and Canadian imports, and an additional 10% on Chinese goods, accusing these countries of facilitating illegal migration and drug trafficking.
