British singer, songwriter and pianist Elton John (77) announced on Sunday that he had lost his sight. He made this statement at the launch of the musical The Devil Wears Prada, inspired by the film of the same name, for which he composed the music. TASR informs about it according to Monday’s Reuters report.
One of the best-selling artists of all time, the writer of hits such as Tiny Dancer and Rocket Man, said at a theater in London’s West End on Sunday that he was unable to see the musical but still enjoyed it. “Some of you may know that I have had problems, but now I have lost my sight. So I couldn’t watch the show, but I enjoyed it,” said Elton John, according to the Daily Mail. He added that what he heard sounded “good.” In a speech to the audience, he also thanked his husband David Furnish for his support.
The musician reported back in September that due to a severe eye infection in the previous months, he stopped seeing in his right eye. He added then that even with his left eye “it’s not the best”. He specified that he can no longer read or watch anything, and he called his ability to record any music in the future as threatened.
Elton John rose to fame in the early 1970s and has since maintained his popularity with rock hits and ballads such as Candle in the Wind. Between 2018 and 2023, he completed a farewell tour, which ended his active concert career, but he announced that he would not stop composing music even after that.
