Jake Sullivan also stated that he encouraged the Ukrainian team to dialogue with the new Trump administration
White House national security advisor Jake Sullivan said on Sunday (Dec 1, 2024) that the United States is not considering the possibility of returning nuclear weapons that it gave up after the end of the Soviet Union.
Sullivan spoke about the topic when answering a question about an article published in November by the American newspaper New York Times, which stated that Western authorities suggested to US President Joe Biden (Democratic Party) that he send this type of weaponry to Kiev before the end of his tenure.
“No, this is not being considered. What we are doing is increasing various conventional capabilities for Ukraine so that they can defend themselves effectively.”Sullivan told ABC.
Russia stated last week that the idea of supplying these weapons to Ukraine was a “absolute insanity” and that one of the reasons Moscow sent troops to Ukraine was to prevent this type of situation. In November, Biden authorized Ukraine to use US-supplied long-range missiles to attack Russia.
“We will do everything in our power during these 50 days to provide Ukraine with all possible tools to strengthen their position on the battlefield, so that they will be stronger at the negotiating table”said Sullivan.
He continued: “And President Biden has directed me to oversee a massive increase in the military equipment we are delivering to Ukraine so that we have spent every dollar Congress appropriated to us by the time President Biden leaves office.”said Sullivan.
Ukraine inherited nuclear weapons from the Soviet Union after the state’s collapse in 1991, but handed them over in 1994 in an agreement called the Budapest Memorandum, in exchange for security guarantees from Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom.
Sullivan also spoke about the new government team of the (Republican Party) that should take over on January 21st. “I encouraged the Ukrainian team to engage in dialogue both with the incoming team and with all of our allies and partners, because, again, on January 21st, the war in Ukraine does not just disappear.”disse Sullivan a Karl.
“Obviously the new team will have its own policy and approach, and I can’t speak for them, but what I can do is make sure we put Ukraine in the best possible position when passing the baton.”he completed.
