STF Minister Alexandre de Moraes authorized the trip, but the former president says he won’t have time to get to the place

The minister of the (Supreme Federal Court) Alexandre de Moraes authorized the former president (PL) to attend the wake and burial of Valdemar Costa Neto’s mother, Leila Caran Costa, aged 99, who died this Tuesday (Dec 3, 2024 ). However, the former head of the Executive will not go. He claimed that there will not be time to reach the ceremony sites.

The wake will be held at the Municipal Chamber of Mogi das Cruzes (SP), while the burial will be at the São Salvador Cemetery, this Tuesday (Dec 3), at around 5pm. Here is the decision (PDF – 128 kB) by Moraes.

According to the Poder360Bolsonaro must make another request to the Supreme Court minister, this time, to be able to be present at Leila’s 7th day mass.

Both Valdemar and Bolsonaro are being investigated for an attempted coup in 2022. Both were indicted by the (Federal Police) in November and are prevented from maintaining contact with each other, as well as with the others investigated in the case.

In the petition from Bolsonaro’s defense requesting permission to go to the wake, the lawyers say that the former president would not keep “any conversations about ongoing investigations” with Valdemar.

In the decision that authorized the trip, Moraes states that, because of the “exceptionality” of the request and with the defense’s commitment not to address matters related to the investigations, the minister authorized both to maintain contact during the ceremonies in Mogi das Cruzes.

“It is worth highlighting the provisional nature of this decision, which does not exempt the applicant from complying with the other precautionary measures imposed on him”declares the magistrate.
