The Club Super World Cup is getting closer and closer, and the division of pots for the group draw for next Thursday (5), at 3pm, is ready. From Brazil came Flamengo, Fluminense, Palmeiras and Botafogo, the last to qualify after winning the Libertadores last Saturday (30).
Placed in pot 3, Botafogo will face two Europeans in the first phase, while the other three Brazilians are seeded, and will only face one European team, coming from pot 2.
In pot 1, there are Flamengo, Fluminense, Palmeiras, River Plate, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. In Botafogo, Boca Juniors, Al-Hilal, Al-Ahly, León, Monterrey, Ulsan and Wydad Casablanca are present.

In the draw, teams from the same country cannot be in the same group, as well as teams from the same confederation, except the European one (since there are 12 teams in the world cup). As a result, four of the eight groups host two clubs from Europe.
Furthermore, American clubs will occupy fourth place in groups A and B, for scheduling reasons. Those coming from pot 1, in turn, will be in first place in each group.
Because of these rules, Botafogo will find a European rival from pot 1 (since they cannot have another South American team in the black and white group), and another from pot 2, which only has teams from Europe. The other three faced, from UEFA, only the opponent coming from pot 2.
But what does each pot mean?
The idea of the pots arose to “guarantee competitive balance and geographic diversity” in the world cup, with separation based on the rankings of each continent. Each pot receives teams according to its criteria, to mix in the big draw.
Pot 1 is for the four best teams from Europe and South America. Pot 2 is only for Europeans, while Pot 3 is for the two best teams from Asia, Africa and Central and North America, in addition to the remaining two from South America. In 4, there are the teams from Oceania and the host country, the United States.
