The federal deputy’s request André Janones (Avante-MG) for the extinction of the Liberal Party (PL), the acronym of the former president Jair Bolsonarowas sent last Monday (2) to the Strategic Group to Combat Anti-Democratic Acts (GCAA) of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR).
In the document, Janones cites an article of the Civil Code that provides for the “disregard of legal personality” when there is a “deviation of purpose”. The PL, according to Janones, deviated from its public function by attacking democratic institutions.
The federal deputy also mentions articles of the Federal Constitution and the Law on Political Parties that provide that parties must respect principles such as national sovereignty, the democratic regime and fundamental rights – values that, according to the parliamentarian, are not respected by Jair’s acronym. Bolsonaro.

“The continuity of the Liberal Party’s practices represents a direct threat to the democratic order and social peace,” said the federal deputy from Minas Gerais in the document. “Support for discourses of institutional discredit, culminating in acts of violence, demands energetic intervention to preserve the stability of the Democratic Rule of Law.”
The letter was filed by Janones on November 14, one day after the bomb attack on the headquarters of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). In the 2020 elections, the author of the attack, locksmith and businessman Francisco Wanderley Luiz was a candidate for councilor in Rio do Sul (SC) for PL.
A week after filing the PL’s request for extinction, the party found itself at the center of indictments by the Federal Police (PF) for attempted coup d’état after the 2022 elections. Among the 37 people implicated in the investigation are Jair Bolsonaro, president of honor of the PL and main member of the party, and Valdemar Costa Neto, national president of the party.

The PF report lists the details of the preparation of an electoral representation of the PL after the 2022 presidential election in which the party’s candidate, Bolsonaro, lost his reappointment to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The PL letter intended to invalidate the votes computed in certain ballot box models. The document was signed by engineer Carlos Rocha, from Instituto Voto Legal, who was also indicted by the PF.
For the Federal Police (PF), in addition to the engineer being notified about the weaknesses of the representation, which did not present concrete evidence about possible fraud in certain ballot box models, the document served to incite military personnel to join the attempt at institutional rupture.
The GCAA, the PGR thematic group that will analyze Janones’ petition for the extinction of the PL, will also be in charge of analyzing the 884 pages of the PF report on the coup attempt. The group is made up of nine attorneys.
