MP-TCU calls for oversight of campaigns regarding tax package

Deputy Attorney General, Lucas Rocha, says that, if “waste” is confirmed, the campaigns must be suspended “immediately”

The deputy attorney general of the Public Ministry at the (Federal Audit Court), Lucas Rocha Furtado, asked this Monday (Dec 2, 2024) that the Court monitor the spending of the president’s government Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) with advertising campaigns about the cut package and the proposal to expand IR (Income Tax) exemption for those earning up to R$5,000.

Furtado stated that, if they are identified “waste and unnecessary costs”he will request the immediate suspension of the campaigns. Read the representation (PDF – 261 kB).

The deputy attorney questioned the logic of these campaigns, indicating that, if the government’s objective is to cut expenses, it makes no sense to invest in advertising campaigns to publicize a cost reduction package. “That seems contradictory”he stated.

“Efficiency in the management of public resources concerns the government’s ability to employ financial, human and material resources in a way that optimizes results and benefits for society, while at the same time reducing waste and superfluous costs. In essence, this implies the most effective use possible of available resources, aiming to achieve the objectives and goals established by public policies and government services.”wrote Furtado.

The advertising campaign, launched with the slogan, was released after the announcement of the package of measures by the Minister of Finance, in a speech on Wednesday night (Nov 27). The expectation is that the set of measures will alleviate R$70 billion to government coffers in 2025 and 2026.

Haddad that will increase the IRPF (Individual Income Tax) exemption range to R$5,000 per month. As a result, the government will receive less taxes. To fund this, people who receive more than R$50,000 per month will be taxed.
