Thujas are popular hedges that can be found in many gardens and yards. But they can suffer during the winter. Not only is it advisable to remember their watering, but you can improve them slightly in other ways.
Do you have a thuja hedge?
Winter hasn’t really started yet and many are already looking forward to the next season, when everything will turn green again. To make your thujas green and delightful too, you can improve them a little at the last minute. But what?
If you do not want to reach for industrial fertilizers, you can easily make a homemade preparation for fertilizing. On the Chilli farmer YouTube channel, the author shows you how in this post.

Enriched dressing for thuja
Why fertilize now for the last time? It should be fertilizers that help the maturation and strengthening of the root system. However, autumn fertilizing is different than during the season. In the spring and summer, you will fertilize “on the green”, i.e. with high nitrogen fertilizers, which will support the growth and green parts of the plants. In autumn, when all the greenery goes into decline, it is only advisable to ensure that the plants have a strong root system and thus also good conditions to survive the winter.
And that is exactly what home-made yeast fertilizer, which is rich in phosphorus and potassium, should be able to do. The advantage is not only that you can prepare it at home for a few crowns, but also that it is a completely natural fertilizer. You will definitely not burn the roots of the plants. However, fertilizers should be used in autumn or early winter at the latest.
Thujas, which are acid-loving, are also suitable for dressing with coffee grounds. It is ideal to let the logr soak in water and then water it with the diluted liquid. It is always better to improve the plants little by little than to apply too strong fertilizers, fertilizing during the winter is not recommended at all. Although the sediment is rich in nitrogen, which is not very desirable right now, adjusting the pH of the soil will ensure that the plant can take up the nutrients better. If the pH of the soil is unsatisfactory, the greens cannot obtain them from the soil.
If you decide to add yeast or lager to the dressing, use only a small, highly diluted amount.
The dressing thaws during the winter
During the winter it is no longer advisable to fertilize the plants, but before it really hardens, you can still apply home fertilizers one last time. But watch out for the weather!
Severe frosts in combination with water are not desirable for plants, so water them only if there is frost and the temperatures do not drop far below freezing.
Remember that thujas are very thirsty and require watering even during the period of depression. Even during the winter, thuja photosynthesis takes place and the plant often suffers from drought. If it is not humid, water thuja sparingly, but avoid freezing days.
