History of rejection begins in 2019, upon leaving Casa Pia. It all comes down to one word: control.
Despite being among them, the new Manchester United coach Rúben Amorim made to the British BBC Sport this Tuesday, in which he revealed, among several confessions, the real reason that removed him from the technical command of his favorite club, the SL Benfica.
The story of his justification starts in 2019when Amorim left Casa Pia.
“Sometimes it’s destiny. At Casa Pia, I wanted to train. Being a head coach. I went to the 3rd division to have this opportunity. I needed to feel what it was like to be a coach”, said the 39-year-old Portuguese, before explaining what separated him from the Reds, which he played for 6 seasons.
“Then I went to Sp. Braga. AND I didn’t go to Benfica because, there, we don’t have full control over the youth teams. I felt that this was important for me: in my view of football, the head coach has to control the young layers. It’s not deciding everything, that’s different, but controlling”, he explained, highlighting that in Braga “he had better conditions”.
It was already known that Rúben Amorim had been approached by Benfica in 2019 — the interest of the then president of the Reds, Luís Filipe Vieira, had already publicly said that he had invited the coach, but that he rejected the proposal.
The rest? It was “very, very lucky”
“I went to Sp. Braga B to feel like a bigger club. I was there as a player. It’s a club with better conditions and I wanted to see that. Then, destiny took me to the main team and I was very lucky in the first games, It was a trap for President Antônio Salvador“, recalls the coach.
“Braga had about five games in a row against Sporting and FC Porto, and I know I was very lucky. Very, very lucky. And it changed my life. I went to Sporting and the rest is history. I have been lucky so far in my career”, highlighted Amorim.
