Iberian Theater
The Iberian Theater ensures that all, indeed all, spectators have the necessary conditions to watch a play.
The title may confuse some readers, but the idea of “Image Blowers” is it the same as the blind people see better, in their own way, a play. And not only.
The project is being implemented at , in Lisbon, which even has training for new “blowers”. The idea emerged in France 15 years ago, by the French association Souffleurs de Sens.
The Iberian Theater ensures that all, indeed all, spectators have the necessary conditions to watch a play.
For this, and in addition to the sessions with audio description and interpretation in Brazilian Sign Language, we also thought about the blind or people with low vision.
One voluntary – student or professional in the field of culture – sits next to the blind person and describes visual elements close to their ear.
This happens during a play but can also be applied to a visit to a museum, or in a festival, for example.
“First we ask which side we are on. We are not on top of the person, we are close; and let’s check. We ask how the person intends: we blow when we think there is actually something to mention, or we wait for her to ask?”, explained Fátima Alves, on .
“We are not doing blind or visually impaired people a favor. AND the person who is blowing also has to feel very good“.
And that doesn’t bothers the rest of the audience? “The blows are not continuous”, explains Fátima. They can even be rare during a play if the person being helped prefers.
This Tuesday, December 3rd, is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
