Former Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein was rushed to hospital on Monday after “alarming” blood test results that required immediate hospitalization. He is expected to remain in the hospital until his condition stabilizes, his lawyer said. TASR reports according to the Reuters agency.
The once influential film mogul has had several health problems recently. Weinstein was diagnosed a few weeks ago with a type of bone marrow cancer, namely chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). He was treated in a New York prison, where he is serving a sentence for sexual offenses.
In September, he also underwent emergency heart surgery, after which his spokesperson Juda Engelmayer stated that he is “out of danger for now”. Weinstein was recognized in February 2020 by a court in the state of New York guilty of rape and sexual assault, for which he was sentenced to 23 years in prison. In April 2024, the Court of Appeal overturned this verdict due to procedural errors and ordered a retrial.
Meanwhile, he was sentenced by a court in Los Angeles to 16 years in prison for raping a woman in Beverly Hills. That second sentence remains final, so Weinstein remained in prison even after the verdict in the New York case was overturned.
Accusations by dozens of women against the Oscar-winning producer began to surface in 2017 and contributed significantly to the emergence of the movement known as #MeToo. Weinstein has been accused of harassment, sexual assault or rape by more than 80 women, including prominent actresses such as Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ashley Judd. Weinstein maintains his innocence, claiming that he only engaged in sexual relations with the consent of the other party.
