Trump’s statement comes amid tension in the Middle East

The elected president of , , sent a strong message to the terrorist group , which he has maintained since October 7 last year. In a statement made this Monday (2) on his own social network, Trump stated that, if the hostages are not released by January 20, 2025, the date on which he assumes the presidency, Hamas “will pay dearly”. The message was clear and direct, promising that those responsible will be hit “harder than anyone in the long and legendary history of the United States.”

Trump’s statement comes amid a scenario of tension in , where Israel faces several battlefronts against terrorist organizations. Trump’s support is firm, aligning with the current administration, which also supports Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. However, Biden has occasionally criticized the way the Israeli prime minister is conducting the offensive, especially in the Gaza Strip. The Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 resulted in more than 1,200 deaths and 251 kidnappings, of which 97 people are still in captivity.
