How and where else to save? This is an evergreen of many households. One way to do this can be to replace the electricity meter. Not that the new one measures slower and less, but it can help you discover hidden reserves or, on the contrary, unabashed consumers of electricity.

We can certainly agree that what we have perfect control over, we can also best influence. And it’s the same with saving electricity. Imagine having online information about your current consumption. This way, you could easily identify the biggest problems and adapt to new knowledge.

Even an electricity meter can be smart

Currently, there is already a gradual replacement of some classic electricity meters with smarter devices. They not only continuously measure consumption, but thanks to the possibility of connecting with an application that can be downloaded to their phone, they inform about changes almost immediately.

Every such household can thus have a clear idea of the state of the electricity meter on a daily basis and which devices would be best to replace with more modern and economical ones. If, for example, you are not at home and you know that only the refrigerator is running, you can easily find out how much it is consuming.

No one is forcing you to do anything

However, if the customer does not want to deal with such “trivialities”, nothing and no one will force him to monitor the data from the smart electricity meter. The advantage for him will still be remote measurement, i.e. no regular electricity deduction, no visits by recorders, no other problems. But if you decide to take advantage of the new options offered, you will probably soon find out how much it pays off.

Who are they intended for?

The truth is that although – as mentioned – the gradual replacement is already in full swing and some collection points are connected to the grid precisely through these smart electricity meters, the aforementioned devices are not yet intended for every household. What conditions must the subscription point meet in order for the user to successfully request such a change? There are several rules mentioned in the European Union directives.

There are several conditions here

Consumption points (regardless of the larger ones, for example in companies, but also in some households), which want to use the advantages of a smart electricity meter, must meet at least one of the given conditions. These include, for example, an annual electricity consumption of over 6 MWh, the existence of a charging station for electric cars, heating of the building with electric direct heaters, storage stoves, or a heat pump, or a photovoltaic power plant must be connected to the network at the point of consumption. Did you know the conditions of your household? Then you can send a request to your electricity provider to replace the electricity meter and wait for a positive answer.

Beware of risks

Although these modern devices have many advantages, there are also some disadvantages to be mentioned that you will have to put up with. First of all, there are the costs of replacing the electricity meter in the low thousands of crowns, and then the fees for its operation – these will probably be around one hundred crowns per month. In addition, it is also a remote measurement and a system that is not completely impossible to intervene from the outside and thus influence the measurement result. But this is the problem with all electronic devices on which Western civilization currently stands. Will you also try to get a new electricity meter? It’s not that impossible.
