An unknown disease killed 143 people in the southwestern People’s Republic of China in November, local authorities told Reuters.
Those who contracted it showed symptoms like hers, including high fever and severe headache, Remy Sacqui, the vice governor of Quango province, and local health minister Apollinaire Yuba said yesterday.
A medical team has been sent to the affected Panji area to collect samples and analyze them to identify the disease.
“The situation is extremely alarming”
The situation is extremely alarming as the number of infected continues to rise, civil society leader Sephorien Mandja told Reuters.
“Panji is a provincial health district and so there is a problem with the supply of medicines,” he said.
Saki and Yuba added that people infected with this disease die in their homes due to lack of treatment.
A local epidemiologist stated that women and children have been most affected by this disease.
A WHO spokesman said today that the UN agency was alerted last week and is working with the DR Congo’s Ministry of Public Health to further investigate the situation.
