The lobulated epiphylum is often called the queen of one night. This is because in some varieties its flowers open mainly at night to attract moths and bats. It is in winter that we can enjoy their appearance and captivating scent.

Epiphilum lanceolate is a plant from the cactus familywhich delights with its slender, flat stems resembling leaves. They grow at their ends spectacular flowers, up to 20 cm in diameter. The inflorescences of the lanceolate epiphylum resemble orchids and may be white, yellow, pink, red or purple.

The natural habitat of the epiphilum are the tropical forests of Central and South America. This plant is an epiphyte, which means that in nature it grows on other plants, e.g. trees, drawing moisture from the air. This adaptation makes it relatively easy to grow indoors, as long as you provide it with the right conditions. Their sweet scent will fill the entire house.

Epiphyllum oxypetalum as a species is one of the most common representatives of the Epiphyllum genus, which includes about 20-25 species. There are few original varieties of this plant, but thanks to the efforts of breeders, we have plenty to choose from. Note the variations below:

• “The Ackermans” – has intensely red flowers and blooms profusely;
• “German Empress” – it has white petals with a cream tint, the flowers are extremely elegant and delicate.
• “Sunset” – these are golden-orange flowers that attract attention, perfect for lovers of warm shades.
• “Pink Elf” – Subtle pink flowers in large sizes, a perfect choice for bright interiors.
• “Yellow Dream” – Intense yellow flowers that stand out against the background of green leaves.

Although Epifilum is native to the tropics, it is relatively easy to grow. Plant likes bright places, but with diffused light. It is best to place it on the eastern or northern windowsill. Use permeable and slightly acidic soil as the substrate, which is suitable for orchids. A plant from tropical forests likes moist air, but does not tolerate overwatering. So water it only when the top layer dries out. It is worth fertilizing the sharp-petalled epiphyllum with orchid nutrientsbut only from spring to autumn.
