A garden pond beautifies the garden. However, its maintenance is sometimes complicated. What will make it easier?

The water surface will add a relaxing touch to the garden. That’s why garden ponds are still popular. They don’t take up much space and will make a big show in your “green oasis”. However, their maintenance is sometimes a bit of a chore. Therefore, you should think about several things when starting a pond. The size of the water surface is mainly important. Paradoxically, the bigger the lake, the more self-cleaning it has. Therefore, the size of the water surface is 50 to 80 square meters and the depth is 170 to 200 square meters.

Bet on the right place

The second thing is, of course, planting plants that will beautify the lake and at the same time help keep it cleaner. Ideal greenery is therefore considered to be iris, sedum, cypress, frogwort, sedge, sedge or sedge. Of course, the location of the water surface is also key. You should never place it near trees that would clog the surface with leaves and other debris. Surprisingly, it is not only deciduous trees that are risky, but also conifers, from which something always falls…

But trees can also help

“Of course, it is best to build the pond further away from the trees so that leaves fall into it as little as possible, but there is also an opposite method that can benefit both the tree and the pond,” says expert Jana Bucharová and continues: “We built the pond under the trees , the biggest ones and I have to say that they look beautiful and are greener than before. In the summer, their shade benefits the pond, because the water in it is cooler and easier to keep clean.”

Cleaning the water surface

So if you have a pond under the trees, you need to clean it continuously. “Our pond is under oak trees, whose leaves contain a lot of tannins, so they don’t spoil much. We put the leaves that we collect from the surface on the compost. The rest will serve as a “cushion” for dragonfly larvae that overwinter in the pond. “says the expert.

Working with the network

According to Jana Bucharová, another option for keeping the lake clean is to stretch a net over it. Then you simply remove the leaves that attack it. However, this solution is more complicated for larger bodies of water, which is why it is better to regularly clean the pond mechanically.
