The general commander of the corporation, Colonel Cássio Araújo, said the PM made a “basic error”; man died after being thrown
The general commander of the (São Paulo Military Police), Colonel Cássio Araújo de Freitas, stated this Tuesday (Dec 3, 2024) that the police officer who threw a man from a bridge in the south zone of the capital committed an “emotional mistake”.
“I consider it a basic error. One emotional mistake of throwing the boy there. It was almost childish, something like that. Make a basic mistake, you will be judged for it”said the general commander of the PMSP. The information is from Folha de S.Paulo.
Watch the PM caught playing bridge man in São Paulo (50s):
“I think this about the boy who was thrown is quite worrying. Because the rest you can link with some positive beginning of the action. It deviates too much from the normality of what we do. It seems like it was almost a joke for him to do that there. Because the information we have is that they were acting, they seized a motorcycle and then, for no apparent reason, he did that there.”
The commander stated that the case is remarkable because it is an action “free”.
“That for me was the most memorable of all. Although his result was different. But in others, the beginning begins with the appropriate use of force, after it overflows. No, that one seemed a little gratuitous to me. And that’s what’s worrying for us,” these.
“I can train emotional competence, but I can’t teach it in a school chair. How do you train emotional competence? It is by placing professionals during training in difficult situations. This emotional empowerment comes over time. That’s why we try to place a more experienced police officer working with young police officers. For him to continue this learning”he explained.
However, the commander stated that he prefers not to comment while the investigation is ongoing.“This is not good for the investigative process and it is also not good for the process of defending people and prosecuting them. If it weren’t for this position, we would have apologized more than once”he declared.
NEW PROGRAM
The commander announced the implementation of a new program that aims to reduce collateral damage, a decision taken after the death of the boy Ryan da Silva Andrade Santos, aged 4, on November 5, in Morro de São Bento, in Santos, in coast of São Paulo. The child was shot by a police officer during a confrontation with criminals.
“That was quite emblematic for me, so that’s why I made the decision to combine this training and do something specific so that we can better understand the possibility of collateral damage. Sometimes, it’s better not to act at a certain time than to act and have the possibility of collateral damage. The police already do this, but now I want to systematize the training”concluded the commander.
