Narges Mohammadi was arrested in 2021 for activism against the death penalty and women’s rights; She is recovering from surgery
The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, Iranian Narges Mohammadi, received provisional freedom for 21 days to recover from surgery. The human rights activist had been imprisoned in Iran since 2021 for leading a protest against the death penalty and the mandatory use of the hijab by women, imposed by the Iranian government.
“Based on the advice of the examining doctor, the public prosecutor suspended the prison sentence against Narges Mohammadi for 3 weeks and she was released from prison”said Mohammadi’s lawyer, Mostafa Nili, in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
According to the lawyer, the Iranian woman underwent surgery to remove a tumor and perform a bone graft and is expected to recover from the procedure.
Even with the license, Mohammadi will still have to serve an extra 21 days of sentence for time outside prison. The activist has already been sentenced 5 times since her last arrest in 2021.
In a statement from , family members called for Mohammadi’s unconditional release and said she “requires specialized medical care in a safe and sanitary environment”.
Family members said Mohammadi had several cardiac arrests, injuries and underwent treatment “inhuman” since entering prison.
“A 21-day suspension of Narges Mohammadi’s sentence is inappropriate. We demand his immediate and unconditional release or at least an extension of his license to 3 months.”they said.
The Iranian government has increased the activist’s sentence over the years. When she won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, an Iranian court sentenced her to another 15 months in detention on charges of propagandizing against the State.
“Narges should never have been arrested in the first place for her peaceful defense of human and women’s rights — the same work that earned her the Nobel Peace Prize”says a statement from the foundation.
