A 40-year-old freelance reporter was arrested for extorting people he was interviewing, last Tuesday (3), in Peixoto de Azevedo (MT), approximately 670 kilometers from Cuiabá. The criminal’s identity was not revealed.

According to the Civil Police, the journalist used reports as a form of pressure, demanding payments to avoid the dissemination of content that could compromise the victims’ reputation.

According to delegate Geraldo Gezoni Filho, the investigations collected evidence that resulted in the reporter’s request for preventive detention.

“The arrest was ordered to guarantee the progress of the investigations, avoid possible intimidation of witnesses and prevent the continuation of the alleged crimes”, highlighted Gezoni.

The Civil Police are trying to identify other possible victims and possible accomplices of the criminal. He will be charged with the crime of extortion, which could result in a sentence of between 4 and 10 years in prison.
