Vanderlei Luxemburgo made a controversial statement while participating in a congress in Santos. The coach cited narrator Cléber Machado as an example to question the different treatment given to football coaches. Luxa recalled the SBT announcer’s departure to Record to remember the times he was called a ‘mercenary’ during his career.
“The press doesn’t accept that a coach is prepared. The guy can comment, report, advertise, and the coach has to just be a coach? In 1997, I left Santos with people saying I was a money maker and a mercenary. And I returned R$500 thousand, I signed a two-year contract and worked for just one, I did the right thing”, said the coach.
The 72-year-old commander decided to cite the case of Cléber Machado to make a comparison about the criticism he received throughout his career in football.
“Today I see Cleber Machado, and I’m not talking bad about him, but he left SBT for Record. Why am I a mercenary and he’s not? He’s not a mercenary, he looks for the best, but why are we treated differently? They’re going to throw coins at him “This treatment of football being different is complicated,” he added.
“If I say ‘you’re going to be responsible for football’, I would accept (returning to football). Today’s executive directors are no longer responsible for football. They are self-interested, I’m going to talk and fuck. How many coaches have changed at Flamengo with Rodrigo Caetano? A series. How many changed with Alexandre Mattos at Palmeiras? So to be responsible, you really have to be responsible, having a stake in the business”, he said, during an interview with the Charla podcast.
