According to the Choson Ilbo newspaper, South Korean Prime Minister Han Tok-su plans to meet with the leadership of the ruling People’s Power Party (PPP) and President Jun’s assistants at 2 p.m. local time (6 a.m. CET), Reuters writes.
The ministers decided to submit their resignation after how South Korean President Jun Sok-yol surprisingly declared martial law in the country yesterdaybut after a few hours he subsequently revoked it.
The Democratic Party, Korea’s largest opposition party, said on Wednesday that will file a lawsuit against President Jun Sok-jol and other senior security officials for the declaration of martial law.
In addition to President Jun, the ministers of defense and interior “we will file a lawsuit for insurrection against key representatives of the army and police, who were involved in the incident, for example martial law commander and police chief,” states the statement of the party, which at the same time wants to file a constitutional lawsuit (impeachment) against the president.
An attempt was made to occupy the parliament building more than 280 soldiers supported by 24 helicopters. However, martial law had to be abolished according to the Korean constitution, because an overwhelming majority of 190 out of 300 deputies voted against its declaration, writes AFP.
