Session marks the end of Bruno Dantas’ term as head of the Court of Auditors; Vital do Rêgo should be the successor

The (Federal Audit Court) elects this Wednesday (Dec 4, 2024) its new president for the year 2025. The election takes place before the plenary session. The new vice-president of the Court of Auditors will also be chosen.

Normally the president who takes over the TCU is the current vice-president, in this case Minister Vital do Rêgo. Mandates are for 1 year, with possible renewal for a further 1 year. The default is for the president to be reappointed. In this configuration, the real concern is who should be chosen as Vital do Rêgo’s deputy and who will possibly take over the Court in 2027.

O Poder360 found that minister Jorge Oliveira is one of the favorites to take over from Vital do Rêgo, who is expected to take office as president of the Court of Account in January 2024.

The new president and vice president will begin their terms on January 1st, with the inauguration scheduled for December 11th. The election for president of the TCU is carried out by the 9 ministers of the Court of Auditors, with a minimum quorum of 5 ministers. The vote is secret.

This Wednesday’s session will be the last of the year in which ministers will deliberate on cases in the Court and will also be the last session to be chaired by Minister Bruno Dantas.

Dantas assumed the presidency of the TCU on an interim basis in July 2022 after the compulsory retirement of former minister Ana Arraes. Due to the former minister’s retirement, Dantas spent more time at the head of the Court of Auditors. Subsequently, the minister was elected president for the 2023 fiscal year and then for 2024.
