Magnolia is an extremely impressive plant of Asian originwhich, however, is extremely popular in Poland due to its large, colorful flowers. It always attracts attention in the garden, but unfortunately it is quite capricious.
In order for it to arouse the admiration of your neighbors in spring, you need to take proper care of it before winter arrives. The last moment for this is at the beginning of December. Check how to protect magnolia against frost, so that it can survive the winter without any problemsand in the next season she presented her beauty in all its glory.
Magnolias are beautiful, but also delicate, so even a small mistake in care can affect their condition. Especially if you have young trees or shrubs in your garden, which have not yet developed a solid root system and therefore may be more susceptible to damage.
It is better not to fertilize magnolias in late autumn or winterbecause this will stimulate it to grow more intensively, which is not desirable at this time of year. Such a mistake can cost you a lot, because the plant should now focus all its strength on surviving until spring.
Do not under any circumstances prune magnolias in November or December. This may lead to infection, and if not, it will certainly weaken the young bushes, which means that even solid protection may not adequately protect them.

One of the most important procedures that many beginner gardeners forget about in late autumn is watering magnolia. If rainfall is negligible, you must remember to regularly, intensively water the bushes.
By watering magnolias, it will be easier to store moisture in the soil. Thus, the rest period will be calmer for her and she will enter the next season with saved energy.

Protecting magnolia against frost is necessary, especially in the case of young seedlings and poorly resistant varieties of the shrub. However, it is best to cover all plants to provide them with adequate protection against the negative impact of unfavorable weather conditions (snow, wind power, low temperatures).
It is best to mound magnolia with pine bark, but you can also use ordinary garden soil. Start right at the base of the plant, creating a 25 cm high dome. This will protect the shrub’s roots from freezing.
- Covering magnolias with fabric
It is also worth protecting the magnolia with a material that will protect it against cold. You can cover the plant with a reed mat or ordinary agrotextile. Wrap the bushes, but do not wrap them too tightly (the air should reach them). In addition to the shoots, you can also lightly cover the flower buds.
