Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealth, the insurance division of the conglomerate UnitedHealth Group, was shot in the chest and died this Wednesday morning (4) outside the Hilton hotel in Manhattan, New York. The information is from the newspaper The New York Timesyes Bloomberg and the newspaper NY Postciting local police sources.
UnitedHealth has not yet commented on the case.
The company was holding its investor day at the time, which was ended early due to “a very serious medical situation” with one of its team members, said UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty.

United Healthcare is the insurance division of United Health. The company owned Amil, but sold the health plan operator to José Seripieri Filho, founder of Qualicorp, in December 2023.
According to Reutersthe office of the assistant commissioner of the New York police forces stated that a man was shot near the Hilton address, but they did not specify that it was Thompson. The man was transported to a hospital in critical condition, but he did not survive and died shortly afterwards. Official confirmation of the name of the deceased is still pending identification of the family.
According to the NOWthe police are treating the case as an execution. The attack occurred around 6:45 am, and the shooter apparently knew the exact time and location of the executive’s entry.

Thompson, 50, was arriving at the event when he was shot several times at close range. After the attack, the suspect fled on foot along Sixth Avenue, according to witnesses, and shortly afterwards used a bicycle to escape. He was reportedly wearing a cream jacket, black mask and gray backpack.
Investigation underway
New York City police have closed a section of 54th Street near the hotel entrance while they investigate the incident, the official said. NOW. Despite what happened, activities inside the hotel continued normally, including the investor conference. At the scene, a small group of police officers were seen near the event space, but guests and visitors continued with their routines.
Thompson assumed leadership of UnitedHealthcare, a division of UnitedHealth Group, in April 2021. He is one of the top healthcare executives in the United States and resides in Minnesota.
