During this period, every year I struggled with the problem of condensation on the windows and in the corners of the windows. Fortunately, I found a way to get rid of excess moisture from the house in winter – after just 2 minutes repeated every day, the rooms started to smell fresh, the air became fresh and the unpleasant effect of “sweating” on the windows stopped. Find out what causes humidity in your home and how you can quickly adjust the humidity level. It’s easy and you don’t need any specialized equipment.
Why are the windows wet in winter?
Condensation of water on window panes and window frames in winter is a common and somewhat normal phenomenon. Experts refer to it as window sweating. Why do windows fog up and collect water when the outside temperature drops and the inside temperature rises?
In rooms, a phenomenon called condensation occurs, i.e. molecules of water vapor from saturated air combine and form drops. This occurs when warm, moist air comes into contact with the cold surface of the glass. Most of the water collects in the lower parts of the windows, which should not be surprising when the radiators, which usually work at “high speed” in winter, are installed just below the window sills.
Can sweating windows be prevented? There is a simple way to keep the humidity in the house at an optimal level and at the same time improve the air quality in the heated rooms. You will feel the difference after 2 minutes and after 4 minutes you will breathe with joy. In addition, the problem of condensation on your windows should disappear. How is that possible? We answer.
How often should I ventilate my apartment in winter?
The accumulation of moisture in rooms in which the air circulation is rarely correct in winter is a problem whose effects you can not only see, but also feel.
A dark film at the edges of the windows and on the surface of the seals are symptoms of mold growth. Molds and fungal spores increase the risk of respiratory diseases, lead to numerous allergic reactions, they can result in high blood pressure, a general decrease in immunity and a significant deterioration in everyday well-being.
Do you want to avoid problems with sweaty windows and poor air circulation in your home? I have a simple way to do it; as soon as winter comes, I will start to ventilate intensively. However, intensive does not mean long-term – opening windows during this period should be done methodically.
How often do I ventilate my apartment in winter? Opening the windows for just 2 minutes a day will improve indoor air quality, and regularity will allow you to systematically remove excess humidity and maintain it at the level of 40-50%, which is suitable for comfortable operation.
Instructions on how to ventilate
Here’s a simple guide to ventilating your home in winter to avoid heat loss but prevent condensation on the windows:
- Turn down the radiators before opening the window in the surroundings, so that they do not produce maximum power to maintain a pleasant temperature when the cold comes in from outside;
- instead of long-term ventilation in “micro” mode, open the window to the full opening – if for various reasons you cannot ventilate the room in this way, use the leaf locking system, which allows you to increase the range of air flow and exchange it more efficiently than in the “micro” mode, but blocks the possibility of opening and closing the leaf, e.g. under the influence of the wind;
- monitor the ventilation time – 2-4 minutes are enough for air exchange;
- open windows even where you are not smoking – in rooms that are rarely used, where a lower temperature is set, you should also ventilate to prevent the formation of mold;
- close the doors when ventilating the rooms.
In October, it is still possible to open the windows for a longer period. The temperature behind the windows is higher, there is still enough sunlight, and opening the windows for 30 minutes does not lead to drastic cooling of the walls or floor. However, in December or January, it would be uneconomical and unpleasant to let that much cold into the room. To begin with, try to open the window for 2 minutes every day, and over time increase this time to 4 to 6 minutes – this is the optimal ventilation time recommended during the winter months.
What causes moisture in your home?
Are you wondering why there is so much humidity in your apartment if you close the bathroom door while bathing and open the window in the room after bathing to release the excess water vapor that collects in it? What causes moisture in your apartment? It turns out that not only long showers or baths lead to the accumulation of condensate. The following factors also lead to increased humidity:
- hand washing
- hand wash,
- drying laundry on folding dryers,
- ironing (with and without steam),
- baking and cooking.
In the kitchen, the installation of a fume extractor (hood) is essential, which will enable the efficient removal of excess moisture during cooking and other forms of heat treatment of many foods. If for various reasons you have decided to use a hood instead of a steam extractor, increase the power of the appliance during intensive cooking. Also, in both cases, use the ventilation technique after cooking – when you finish frying in the kitchen, open the nearest window for 2-3 minutes so that the trapped steam can escape and the air is changed and fresh again.
