The Olivais Parish Council and the Lisbon City Council inaugurated, on November 30th, the Jardim Estátua Zé Pedro, celebrating the life and legacy of Zé Pedro, founder of the iconic band Xutos & Pontapés and one of the greatest symbols of the Portuguese rock, who passed away seven years ago.
“It was with great pride and emotion that we inaugurated Jardim Estátua Zé Pedro, in honor of this great musician and giant human being”, highlighted the Paróquia dos Olivais in a statement.
The guitarist spent his childhood and adolescence in Olivais, where he began to follow the path towards creating music that marked generations. The date chosen for the tribute coincided with the seventh anniversary of his departure, making the moment even more symbolic.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including Carlos Moedas, president of Lisbon City Council, and Rute Lima, president of the Olivais Parish Council, as well as friends and colleagues of Zé Pedro, such as Kalú and Gui, dos Xutos & Kicks. The sculptor Pedro Barbosa, responsible for creating the statue, was also present.
The initiative was born from a petition that gathered around two thousand signatures, reflecting the public’s affection and respect for Zé Pedro. The space not only honors his memory, but also celebrates his invaluable contribution to Portuguese music and national rock.
