A 5.6 magnitude earthquake shook the province this Thursday Iranian from Khuzestan, in the southwest of the country, No possible victims or damages have been reported at this time..

The Iranian Seismological Center indicated that the seismic movement occurred near the city of Haftgel at 7:20 a.m. local time (3:50 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers, Iranian media reported. The tremor was felt in the cities of Ahvaz, Masjed Soleyman, Bavi, Hamidiyeh and Shushtar, according to the Mehr agency.

Shortly after, another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 and a depth of eight kilometers shook the area again near the city of Masjed Soleyman. So far there have been no reports of casualties or damage to the buildings and the authorities have sent three Red Crescent teams to assess the extent of possible damage.

Iran has great seismic activity and numerous earthquakes are recorded. The most serious to date in Iran occurred in December 2003 and June 1990, when 31,000 and 37,000 people lost their lives, respectively. More recently, in November 2017 a magnitude 7.3 earthquake caused 620 deaths and more than 12,000 injuries in the northwestern province of Kermanshah.
