40-year-old Amina from Sussex, England noticed something strange after her son named Zak accidentally stubbed his toe on the washing machine. Two days later, his entire finger turned dark, and that’s why his mother she took him to the emergency room, where the doctor prescribed antibiotics. However, it turned out that they did not alleviate his condition.
The next day, Amina drove him back to the hospital, where he had to stay all night because the doctors did blood tests. They revealed news that completely shocked the mother and her husband. It turned out that Zak suffers from a disease called acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It is a rare type of cancer affecting the blood and bone marrow, which it usually develops very quickly and needs to be treated immediately. It occurs most often in young people and children, especially under the age of 4.
Little Zak’s family noted that it was very difficult to cope with the news of his diagnosis. “When he was diagnosed, I was shocked. Our whole world was turned upside down. It worried us. We learned that Zak’s immune system is very weak. If, according to the doctors, he had not injured his toe, we would soon come to cancer in a different way” said Amina.
In the hospital little Zak had to face intensive chemotherapy and steroid treatment. “The doses were gradually increased over the course of three months. In a certain period he was getting treatment almost every day and his hair was looking good. He didn’t handle it very well because he was small and didn’t understand what was going on. He was examined by many doctors, and that’s why he became afraid of everyone,” explained Amina.
Although the boy still needs treatment, he is gradually recovering. Currently he undergoes chemotherapy only once a month. “All the doctors were amazing and did a great job. The treatment will end in June 2025 and will be followed by regular check-ups for at least five years. Zak has done very well throughout the journey. It is a little warrior and an inspiration to us all,” remarked the mother.
