The basic food basket is more expensive this Christmas than last year. THE analyzed 16 foods used at this time. Culinary chocolate, cod and turkey are the products with the biggest price increase. However, there are products that are cheaper this year than in 2023.
Already thinking about food for Christmas Eve and Christmas lunch? Or on other special days to sit around the table with family and friends? If applicable, take note of what is more expensive and what, on the contrary, is cheaper.
In total, the food basket is more expensive, but there are some foods that are cheaper than a year ago.
But here we go.
Cooking chocolate, sugar, carolino rice, cabbage, large cod, turkey legs, oil, eggs, flour, olive oil, red wine, carcass, semi-skimmed milk, red potatoes, pineapple and white wine were the 16 foods chosen by DECO Proteste.
The consumer protection organization analyzed the current values of foods typically used by the Portuguese during this festive season and compared them with those of last year.
Let’s go to the accounts.
On December 4th, the products cost total 54,89€4% more than last year, when the value was €51.82.
Do you know what food is biggest price increase? At the table of cooking chocolate. A year ago, it cost €1.98. Now, the value is €2.86, that is, €0.88 more than last year.
O large cod and turkey legwhich are among the Portuguese’s choices for Christmas Eve, also lead the table with the biggest increases: they now cost 18% more than last year.
Then the cooking oilwith an increase of 10% compared to the previous year.
While the pineapple and white wine register an increase of 1%, semi-skimmed milk is 3% more expensive.
And the eggsa food used for “a thousand and one” recipes? This year, they cost R$1.67, an increase of 9% compared to last year. Carcass increased by 8%.
However, there are food products that are cheaper this year than last year. This is the case of white sugarwhich currently costs €1.25, but last year it cost €1.77, or carolina rice which costs €0.36 less than in 2023.
Also the cabbagea cake flouro red wine ea red potato they are cheaper, as is extra virgin olive oil which, a year ago, cost €10.21 and this Wednesday cost €9.56.
In December, DECO Proteste will carry out a weekly analysis of this basket to “monitor the evolution of food prices”.
