Mexican security agencies announced today that they have seized the largest amount of fentanyl in the country’s history. This is 1,100 kilograms of the synthetic opioid, which was detected in the state of Sinaloa.
In the announcement it is pointed out that what was seized corresponds to 20 million doses and that the economic blow to traffickers is estimated at 400 million dollars.
Mexican authorities located the huge amount of fentanyl in two warehouses in the city of Amé thanks to information gathered from informants.
“This is an investigation that started a long time ago. And yesterday it produced this result. It’s the biggest seizure (of fentanyl) ever,” President Sheinbaum said today at a press conference.
The record seizure comes at a time when the “civil war” between warring factions of the Sinaloa cartel is at its height, in the wake of the arrest of Ismael “El Mayo” Sabada, co-founder – along with Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who serving a life sentence in the US – of the notorious cartel.
In addition, US President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to force Mexico to take drastic measures to stop the export of fentanyl (a synthetic opioid responsible for thousands of deaths) to his country. in imports from the neighboring country, in case it does not find results in the fight against fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration.
