Court of Auditors report reveals that 11,900 projects are on hold; health and education are the most affected
The (Federal Audit Court) reported this Wednesday (Dec 4, 2024) that 11.941 Public works are at a standstill in Brazil, corresponding to 52% of contracts in progress. Thus, for every 2 projects contracted with federal resources, 1 is paralyzed.
The report indicates that, in addition to delaying the development of essential infrastructure, the shutdown results in a waste of resources. Around R$9 billion has already been spent and another R$20 billion is needed to complete the projects. The areas of health and education are the most affected, with 8.674 works stopped, representing 72% of the total. Read (PDF – 2 MB).
Although the number of suspended works has increased, the total value of these works has decreased. In 2023, the estimated value for the suspended works was R$32.23 billion, while in 2024 it fell to R$29.36 billion.
The reduction is considered a positive point for the TCU, as it indicates a reduction in expected costs.
Maranhão leads the list of states with the most work halted, with 1,232 projects and a value of R$1 billion in federal resources planned for these investments.
In 2nd place is Bahia, with 972 works suspended, totaling R$3.3 billion in federal resources and 57% of the total.
Pará occupies 3rd position, with 938 works suspended, which corresponds to 76.9% of the total projects in the State, and a planned investment of R$ 1.4 billion. In 2023, the 3 UFs were also among those with the highest number of suspended works.
