The capital of Rio hosted another meeting of international leaders in November, when the event generated almost R$600 million

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, (PSD), once again offered the city to the president (PT) to host the Brics heads of state meeting in 2025.

This Thursday morning (Dec 5, 2024), Paes reiterated the proposal in a post on X (formerly Twitter): “Rio is once again ready to welcome our international guests! It will be a great honor for our city!”.

The mayor had already made the same proposal during the launch of the New Year’s Eve 2025 program. At the time, Paes told journalists that he was making a “public appeal” for the capital of Rio to host the meeting of international authorities in 2025.

I have already asked and am making a public appeal, offering the city of Rio de Janeiro for President Lula to host the Brics here next year. The city is ready and will organize itself to hold another great meeting”, said Paes at the time.

In November 2024, Rio de Janeiro also hosted the G20 summit meeting. The meeting, which lasted 2 days, brought together the heads of state of the world’s largest economies and in Rio’s economy.

The value is an estimate that calculates the sum of operational expenses (R$ 226.3 million) – in infrastructure, rental of spaces and various services –, expenses of more than 120 thousand participants and the amount invested (R$ 32 million) in the renovation of the Museum of Modern Art, where the Leaders’ Summit meeting took place.

Understand Brics and its objectives

Brics is an acronym for the bloc formed by BBrazil, Russia, Inndia, China and South Africa (Sout Africa, in English). The original expression was “Bric” and was coined in 2001 by Jim O’Neill, the then chief economist at Goldman Sachs. At the time, South Africa was not yet part of the bloc. He became a member in 2010.

The member countries cooperate in several areas. They intend to counteract the influence exerted by the economies of the United States and European countries. Find out more about Brics’ goals.
