The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes (PSD), criticized this Wednesday (4) studies by the federal government to expand the capacity of Santos Dumont airport.

Paes said he discussed the matter with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), in a meeting at Palácio do Planalto. He added that the representative would “draw the attention” of the ministers involved in the process. And he added that it is a “matter of honor” to recover Galeão.

“It surprised the president that this news came out today [sobre os estudos]. This is the president’s decision, that Galeão is strengthened. Santos Dumont has his role to play. Today I will have some numbers on my social networks. The president has once again caught the attention of Minister Márcio [Macêdo]from the minister [da Casa Civil] Rui Costa and minister will speak [de Portos e Aeroportos] Silvio [Costa Filho]”, stated the mayor.

“There is no such conversation. It is a matter of honor to recover Galeão. Things are going very well, another gift from President Lula to Rio de Janeiro”, he added.

Paes went to Palácio do Planalto to sign the agreement that transfers the management of two federal hospitals to the municipality.

Also on Wednesday afternoon (4), the Ministry of Ports and Airports released a note to inform that there was no change in the ordinance that limited flights at Santos Dumont airport.

“The Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor), through the National Civil Aviation Secretariat (SAC), clarifies that there is no change in the ordinance that deals with the operational limitation of passengers at Santos Dumont airport, established in January this year, after a broad debate involving the City Hall and the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Infraero, the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac), the Federal Audit Court (TCU), airlines, concessionaires and this Ministry”, states the text.

The ministry also added that it will carry out an assessment in 2025, one year after the restriction began, following guidance from the TCU (Federal Audit Court). This evaluation will be to “verify the feasibility of meeting Infraero’s request, which proposes a small increase in passenger movement, without compromising the quality of services at Santos Dumont Airport”.

The ministry also adds that it is working to strengthen Galeão’s operations and that, since the beginning of restrictions at the city’s other airport, the movement of tourists at Rio de Janeiro’s airports has grown by 4.5%, while cargo movement has increased by 25%. %.
