The mayor of , (-PE), is expected to assume the national presidency of the PSB in 2025. He currently holds the position of vice-president of the party.

Campos was one of the valid votes. Son of former governor Eduardo Campos (PSB), who led the PSB for almost ten years (2004-2015), he is part of the youngest group in the party, together with (PSB-SP).

He was chosen as successor by the party president himself, Carlos Siqueira, whose term ends in May next year.

Campos managed to pave his path as one of the main leaders of the PSB and has a good performance on social media, a field that tends to be dominated by right-wing figures such as deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) and the defeated candidate for mayor of São Paulo Pablo Marçal (PRTB-SP).

To make the transition official, the mayor must be approved in a vote by the PSB National Executive. According to interlocutors, the process is already underway and it is practically impossible for the nomination to be blocked. The announcement should take place in the first half of next year.

Siqueira, however, has avoided making statements on the subject in advance and states that the succession will be discussed at the appropriate time.

At the base of the PSB, there are divisions over the future of leadership. One wing sees in Campos the opportunity to strengthen the party, while another defends that the position be occupied by someone unrelated to those in 2026.

A member, heard with reserve, considers that the political agenda of the mayor of Recife could limit his performance at the head of the party. This is because, soon after assuming the presidency, he will probably be focused on the Pernambuco government campaign.

Siqueira frequently praises the mayor. In an interview with the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo last week, he classified it as an example of innovation, renewal and competence in Brazilian politics.

Allies of the former deputy claim that his choice as party leader makes perfect sense, since today Campos is seen as the “new face” of the PSB.

He participated directly in the negotiations for the affiliation of figures such as the minister, now minister of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), the vice-president, Marcelo Freixo and Tabata.

The idea is that, in the coming years, the mayor will further consolidate himself as a political articulator and be able to bring more important names to the party, which are electorally competitive and increase the PSB’s representation in the National Congress, as well as the number of governors and city halls.

Upon taking office in the party, the head of Recife’s Executive will follow the example of his father, who was at the head of the PSB for more than ten years (2004-2015).
