A gunman shot and injured two children at a California elementary school on Wednesday, the local sheriff’s department said.
The attack occurred at the Feather River Seventh-day Adventist School in Oroville, California, located about 55 miles (89 km) north of Sacramento, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office said by telephone.
Megan McMann, spokeswoman for the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, said deputies quickly responded to reports of an unidentified adult male shooting at students on campus at 1:09 p.m.
When officers arrived, the man was dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, McMann said.
“Two students suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to local hospitals for treatment,” McMann said, adding that he was unaware of their conditions.
There is still no known motive for the attack, and the shooter has been identified, McMann said.
In a social media post, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office said the students were being taken to a nearby church.
McMann said an investigation is ongoing and officers are trying to determine if the alleged shooter had any connection to the school.
Feather River Seventh-day Adventist School, operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, serves children in kindergarten through eighth grade, approximately ages 5 to 13, according to its website.
