The president-elect’s nomination to hold the position next year will replace Danny Werfel, appointed by Joe Biden to head the tax agency since March 2023
The President-elect of the United States, said he will nominate former congressman Billy Long as commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), signaling his intention to remove Danny Werfel before the end of his term in November 2027. Werfel, who was chosen by President Joe Biden, has led the tax agency since March 2023.
He has been implementing expanded oversight and technological changes to the IRS, which Democrats approved in 2022 despite objections from Republicans. Trump’s decision to pick a new commissioner could signal a significant change in the direction of the IRS, which has more than 80,000 workers and directly affects many more Americans than almost any other federal agency.
“He is an extremely hard worker and respected by everyone, especially those who know him in Congress,” Trump said in a statement Wednesday night. “Taxpayers and the wonderful employees of the IRS will love having Billy at the helm.” An IRS spokeswoman did not immediately comment. It is worth remembering that the Income Tax position requires Senate confirmation.
