Paul Atkins was Republican pick for Securities and Exchange Commission; the nomination must be voted on in the Senate
The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump (Republican), announced this Wednesday (Dec 4, 2024) the appointment of Paul Atkins to lead the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission), equivalent to the Securities and Exchange Commission. The government agency is responsible for overseeing stock and real estate bond prices. The nomination must be voted on by the Senate.
The SEC board makes decisions based on the vote of 5 commissioners. Atkins previously served as commissioner from 2002 to 2008 under Republican George W. Bush. As president of the SEC, he will be responsible for leading the commission and applying the measures.
Atkins is seen as a supporter of the cryptocurrency sector. During his period as SEC commissioner, he defended deregulation and proposed easing measures for the financial market. Atkins argues that cryptocurrencies should not be treated similar to securities, such as stocks or bonds.
