Txai Band: discover the Grammy-winning project with the Huni Kuin people, from Acre

Art is one of the ways of knowing the culture of a people, as well as a way of perpetuating customs and forms of expression through generations. Musicians Luizga and Paulo Novaes have a project that matches this idea very well.

Txai Band is the combination of two creative minds with several artists from the Huni Kuin people, from Aldeia Chico Curumim. In total, the project has seven tracks, three of which are vignettes and four complete songs. Two of the songs have part of the lyrics in Portuguese, while the other two are in the Hatxa-Kuin language. The details were disclosed in a special article published by VEJA Magazine.

The idea for carrying out the project had its seed planted when Luizga, who is from Minas Gerais, came to Acre in 2019, to participate in an artistic residency in Jordão, with artists from the Huni Kuin people, through the Itaú Cultural project.

Years later, Paulo Novaes, winner of the 2021 Latin Grammy, took part in a trip to the Chico Curumim village, in 2023. The visit was turned into an album and a documentary.

The musicians’ intention is for the initiative to become a long-term project and for other releases with new collaborations to emerge.
