Court confirmed the validity of the law that could ban the app until January 19, if its owner, ByteDance, does not sell it to a non-Chinese company
The Chinese company that owns TikTok will be banned from the US if it fails to meet a January 19 deadline to sell the app, as a result of a federal appeals court ruling on Friday.
A three-judge panel in Washington upheld a new US law enacted to protect national security and users’ privacy. The ruling leaves the Supreme Court as the company’s last realistic hope to stop the law from taking effect.
Although the ban goes into effect the day before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, his opposition to it could still complicate its enforcement. Trump spoke out against a ban as he tried to win over young Americans in his campaign, despite having tried to force the sale of the app during his first term.
