A famous doctor revealed what it means if you have to run to the toilet immediately after eating. According to him, this condition causes a phenomenon that is quite common in humans. , the expert recommended which foods you should avoid to avoid discomfort.
What causes this phenomenon?
Certified gastroenterologist Joseph Salhab in late July, he posted a video on TikTok that has more than 1.8 million followers. In the post, he talked about the frequent phenomenon in which people go to the toilet immediately after eating. “It’s not because it moves right into your digestive tract. When you feel like you have to go to the toilet immediately after eating, this is something called the gastrocolic reflex“, he noted.
Gastrocolic reflex is a phenomenon that stimulates movement in the lower part of the digestive tract after eating. “It’s not a disease, but a normal reflex that helps the body make room for more food,” the expert added, later explaining how the phenomenon works. “The stomach expands and that it sends signals to the brain, which then informs the colon. That’s it then it will begin to shrink to make more room for food. Eventually, the gastrocolic reflex makes you go to the toilet,” Salhab said.
The doctor added that some patients may have increased sensitivity to this reflex. These include, for example, people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which causes unpleasant or painful symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, gas or bloating. “Some people have really bad stomach pains or cramps after eating because colon contractions can be very strong and violent“, he pointed out.
