The situation in Syria, where the government of Russian ally President Bashar Assad is facing an offensive by rebel groups, shows that Moscow cannot fight on two fronts. This was stated on Friday by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which again denied Kyiv’s participation in the fighting there. It was reported by the Reuters agency, writes TASR.
“We see that Russia cannot fight on two fronts – this is clear from the events in Syria,” ministry spokesman Heorhij Tychyj told journalists. He was responding to a question about accusations by Iran, another Assad ally, that Ukraine supports groups that Tehran considers terrorist. “Ukraine categorically and firmly rejects any accusations… of our alleged participation in the deteriorating security situation in Syria,” the spokesperson added.
After years without moving front lines in Syria’s civil war, which began 13 years ago, rebels there launched a rapid offensive against government forces a week ago. They have already occupied two large cities and other territories near it. “Significant Russian losses in Ukraine have led Moscow to withdraw most of its troops and equipment from Syria, leaving its ally … without the necessary support,” said Tychy.
