Syrian forces withdrew from the city in the east of the country and it was fully occupied by Kurdish soldiers.
Units of the Syrian army reportedly withdrew from the city of Deir ez-Zour in the east of the country on Friday. Kurdish militias supported by the United States took control of the city. Kurdish forces are advancing at a time when fighting has resumed in Syria between rebel groups and the government forces of President Bashar Assad. TASR informs about it according to the AFP agency.
“Syrian forces and their allies backed by Iran have completely withdrawn from the areas they control in Deir ez-Zor province, and Kurdish troops are advancing towards their areas,” said Rami Abdal Rahman, who heads the independent Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). based in Britain.
SOHR’s information is also confirmed by the independent Live Universal Awareness Map portal, which states that Kurds move freely on the streets of Deir az-Zaur. However, Reuters sources say that Kurdish forces only control its eastern part.
AFP reminds that the province of Deir ez-Zour is divided between the Kurdish forces, controlling the part of it east of the Euphrates River, and the Syrian army.
The terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) also reportedly recorded territorial gains south of Deir ez-Zaur. It was almost completely defeated by coalition forces led by the USA in 2017.
Last week, fighting resumed in civil war-torn Syria. They are mainly concentrated in the northwest of the country, where the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham has captured the second largest city of Syria, Aleppo. It also advanced towards the strategic city of Homs, from which government forces allegedly withdrew on Friday.
According to AFP, the rebels also took control of several border crossings with Jordan and Iraq. Jordan previously announced that it had closed the main border crossing with Syria to commercial and passenger traffic.
