President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said, during an event in Mato Grosso do Sul this Thursday (5) that the leader of the IMF (International Monetary Fund), Kristalina Georgieva, should “know everything except the economy”, for insinuating that Brazil’s economy would grow by just 0.8% in 2023.
“In the middle of January 2023, the director general of the IMF, who must know everything except the economy, came to tell me that the Brazilian economy would grow in 2023 by just 0.8%. I said to her: ‘Ma’am , you may know a lot about the IMF, but you don’t know about Brazil'”, he said.
The president then cited data on the correction of Brazilian GDP growth for 2023, published on Tuesday (3) by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), which showed growth of 3.2%.
Lula and Georgieva. The GDP result released at the time already showed growth of 2.9% in 2023.
Throughout the year, the president said he wanted to meet with Georgieva to demand the IMF’s incorrect projections on the issue. In an interview in December last year, Lula stated his desire to meet with the director general of the IMF, during COP 28, to show that the organization’s predictions were wrong.
