The STM (Superior Military Court) elected a woman as president of the court for the first time in history. took office as Minister of the Court on March 27, 2007.
Appointed by Lula (PT) that year, she was the first woman to join the STM — the oldest court in the country, created in 1808.
Rocha has a degree in Law from PUC-MG (Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais) and a PhD in Constitutional Law from the Faculty of Law of UFMG (Federal University of Minas Gerais).
At the STM, the minister was also vice-president between 2013-2015, having served as president of the Court to complement the two-year term.
Both will serve as president of the Court in the 2025-2027 biennium. Possession is scheduled for March 2025, on a date to be defined.
In the same voting session, the current president, Air Lieutenant Brigadier Francisco Joseli Parente Camelo, was elected as vice president. Both assume the presidency of the Court for the 2025-2027 biennium, with their inauguration scheduled for March 2025, on a date to be defined.
Elizabeth Rocha was one of the names considered to succeed the then minister of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), Rosa Weber, with the end of her term in 2023. At the time, the new president of the STM pressured President Lula to choose a woman for the position.
Civilian, the minister is married to retired general Romeu Costa Ribeiro Bastos, brother of Paulo Costa Ribeiro Bastos, a member of the MR-8 and one of the names on the list of missing political victims of the dictatorship.
