The city’s mayor (PSD) will host the meeting of the heads of state in 2025, announced this Friday (6).
He was in Brasília this week dealing with this and other topics. Brazil will occupy the presidency of the bloc of countries next year.
“The Brics meeting will come here next year. He (President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva) said I couldn’t announce it yet, but screw it. I’m already announcing it”, said Paes in a speech during an event in the capital of Rio de Janeiro this Friday.

Last month, Rio hosted , which brought the leaders of the world’s main economies to Brazil. On the occasion, several leaders took advantage of their stay in the city to tour.
“I have already spoken to comrade Xi (Jinping, president of China) to meet him here again. (The President of France, Emmanuel) Macron is not coming and I won’t be able to walk with him here. Neither does (US President Joe) Biden. Suddenly we call Biden to visit Christ the Redeemer without being president”, added Paes.
France is not part of Brics — a group initially formed by Brazil, Russia, India and China and which was later expanded to include several countries from the so-called Global South. The United States is also not part of the bloc and, in January 2025, Biden will be succeeded in the White House by Donald Trump.

Rio has hosted major international events in recent years, such as the 2007 Pan American Games, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development Rio+20 in 2012 and the 2016 Olympics, in addition to the G20 summit last month.
The city, which also hosted the 2014 World Cup final held in Brazil and the 2020 and 2023 Copa Libertadores finals, is seeking to host the 2031 Pan American Games together with neighboring Niterói.
