Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is lit in New York

Crowds gathered to celebrate the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in New York City on Wednesday.

The tradition dates back to December 1933, when the first . This year, the tree has more than 50,000 multicolored LED lights, according to NBC.

The tree will remain lit daily from 5am to midnight until January. On New Year’s Eve, the light will shine for 24 hours, while on New Year’s Eve the lighting will end early at 9pm to accommodate the festivities in nearby Times Square.
